How Toxic Colleagues Corrode Performance

I’ve been asked quite a few times of late why is it so important that leaders and employees become aware of their behaviours.

My response often has been because people generally leave their bosses or the incivility culture that has been allowed to grow within an organisation. The down flow effects of this is that the recruiting and training new staff members, coupled with the loss of productivity that comes with having new staff members is an expensive process for any organisation to go through.

So, I decided to find out the numbers so employers can see how their toxic colleagues maybe impacting on the performance of the organisation if not managed or corrected.

This brief Harvard Business Article outlines the numbers. Here are those key numbers for you.

48% decreased their work effort,

47% decreased their time at work,

38% decreased their work quality,

66% said their performance declined,

80% lost work time worrying about the incident,

63% lost time avoiding the offender, and

78% said their commitment to the organization declined.
